Nonprofit Technology Today

Learning More About Tech Trends for Nonprofits
by Mark Becker, Founding Partner, Cathexis Partners

At Cathexis Partners, we aim to keep up with the latest technology that can help our nonprofit clients raise funds and achieve their mission. As part of that goal, we recently teamed up with some of our friends in the nonprofit tech industry to present webinars that give you greater insight into some of the tech we think is worth considering for your nonprofit.

In case you’ve missed any of the webinars or would like to revisit them, here are links to the recorded sessions: If you want to learn more or would like help implementing any of this tech, contact us at Cathexis Partners.

Ask the Expert

Q: What should we be looking for in a peer-to-peer fundraising tool to support a great participant experience?
A: by Jon Reich, Partner, Operations, Cathexis Partners

As people participate in your campaigns, they’ll be comparing the experience with other online experiences, including those of Amazon, Facebook, and other familiar websites. It’s important to make sure your peer-to-peer software supports the experience your participants expect.

Consider the following capabilities as you evaluate peer-to-peer fundraising software platforms:
  • Event registration - Can participants pay a registration fee, ask additional questions during registration, and electronically review and accept a waiver before completing registration?
  • Ability to re-join campaign - Can you to make returning participants’ lives easier by giving them the ability to “reclaim” their team from last year, or allow individual participants to look at who they sent emails to and who supported them last year?
  • Gamification - Does the platform provide visual ways, such as engagement badges, to show competition and achievements throughout a campaign?
  • Multi-registration - Does the platform give participants the convenience of registering multiple people in a single transaction?
  • Credit card guarantee - Can you securely capture credit card information to hold for later charging if a participant does not meet an agreed upon minimum fundraising goal?
  • Offline gift recording - Does the platform allow participants to enter offline (cash or check) gifts that they can then send in to the organization or hand in on the day of the event?
  • Transaction fee coverage - Does the donor and/or participant have the option to cover credit card fees within their transaction?
  • Personal pages - Does the platform allow participants to have personal fundraising pages?
  • Progress meters - Does the platform have campaign, personal, and/or team progress meters, and/or a top fundraisers / top donors list?
